Packaging design is a well-thought-out process in which strategy, creativity, and technical knowledge come together. It all starts with a thorough analysis of the product, the target audience, and the market. It is examined where and how the product is sold, what image it should project, and what information must be included. These insights form the basis for all subsequent design choices.
Next, a creative concept is developed that aligns with the brand identity. Colors, typography, and visual style are selected to ensure the packaging is recognizable and distinguishes itself from competitors. At the same time, consideration is given to the structure and material of the packaging, with attention to protection, ease of use, sustainability, and cost.
Next, the graphic design is developed based on the technical form of the packaging. All visual and informative elements are given a logical place, such as the logo, product information, barcodes, and legal notices. The design is technically prepared for production, with correct color settings, bleed, and crop marks, so that the print result perfectly matches the design.
Finally, a proof or mock-up is often created to assess the packaging in reality. Upon approval, the design goes into production. Strong packaging combines appearance with functionality and plays a crucial role in how a product is perceived – and chosen – at a point of sale.
A die-cut is the technical cutting and folding shape of a package or printed item. The shape determines exactly where a package is cut, folded, and potentially glued. In other words: the die-cut is the technical plan required to turn a flat printed sheet into a finished package.
In practice, a die-cut is used to create a die-cutting tool. The die-cutting tool cuts the printed material according to the die-cut and applies fold lines. The die-cut is usually supplied as a technical line drawing (often in vector format) and contains cutting lines, fold lines, and sometimes also gluing zones.
When designing packaging, the die-cut is essential. After all, the graphic design is placed on the die-cut so that images, text, and logos are in the correct position after folding. Without a correct die-cut, elements can become misaligned or illegible.
In short: a die-cut forms the technical basis of every package and ensures that the design is not only aesthetically pleasing but can also be produced perfectly and used functionally.
When it comes to packaging, a mock-up is a realistic example of what the packaging will look like in real life before it is actually produced. This can be a digital 3D visualization or a full-size physical sample package, including the design, colors, and sometimes even the chosen material.
A packaging mock-up makes it possible to assess how the design works in reality: whether the information is easily readable, whether the design stands out, how the proportions feel, and how the product feels in the hand or sits on the store shelf. It helps to detect any errors or areas for improvement in a timely manner, before printing and production costs are incurred.
In addition, a mock-up is an important communication tool. Mock-ups ensure that all parties involved—from marketing and design to production and retail—have the same vision in mind. In this way, a mock-up reduces the risk of misunderstandings and contributes to a well-thought-out and successful packaging design.
